Florida Retired Canine Handlers Request For Assistance

The Retired Police Canine Foundation is proud to be Florida’s Charity of Choice to administer the Florida Care for Retired Police Dogs Program Act.

Florida retired canine handlers and owners are eligible for $1500 reimbursement per fiscal year through the Florida Care for Retired Police Dogs Program Act.

Before receiving reimbursement you must verify your canine's service by obtaining a letter from the department where your canine last served. The letter must be on department letterhead and signed by a police official.

The verification letter must include requested information and one or more of the following following parameters in order to be eligible to receive reimbursement from the program:

  1. Valid documentation from the law enforcement agency or correctional agency from which the dog retired which verifies that the dog was in the service of or employed by that agency;
  2. and
    1. That the dog served 5 years or more with that agency;
    2. Documentation showing that the dog served a total of 5 years or more with two or more law enforcement agencies or correctional agencies; or
    3. That, notwithstanding the length of service requirements elsewhere in this paragraph, the dog served 3 years or more with one or more law enforcement agencies or correctional agencies, was injured in the line of duty while serving with a law enforcement agency or correctional agency, and retired from the agency the dog was serving with at the time of the injury due to such injury.
